Cavalleria Rusticana

Cavalleria Rusticana

Cavalleria Rusticana

CarminaPriaPea is a new artistic initiative with a dual function: to showcase and engage young emerging talent and to present operas from the standard repertoire from an LGBTQI perspective. This is hardly novel, but the opportunity to exclusively engage young professionals with the chance to cut their teeth on bigger repertory roles is rare. Carmina’s principal goal is to highlight LGBTQI issues through the use of standard operatic repertoire. Not only does it allow these works to be viewed from a very different perspective, it invites us to view gender issues from a alterative viewpoint with the hope to lead our audiences to further engage with these issues.

In the original version critics suppose that Santuzza’s excommunication from the rest of the very religious and closed community is down to the fact that she might be pregnant (by Turiddu). Therefore her desperate attempt to win Turiddu back to spare herself and her bastard future embarrassment makes sense and would certainly explain Santuzza’s single-minded mania and desperation. In Carmina’s version Santuzza is an outed gay man in a very religious conservative community who has been infected with HIV by Turiddu in the days before HIV was treatable.

This performance is a fundraiser for our production of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte in April 2018.
