SARAH Quand Même

SARAH Quand Même

Written and performed by Susie Lindeman, whose credits include Oscar and Prix Europa award-winning films and West End productions.  Directed by London-based international director, Wayne Harrison, AM, former Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company, whose productions have all been highly acclaimed.

Sarah’s life inspires a thousand tales, from playing Hamlet to being the world’s first film star or losing her leg, but SARAH Quand Même reveals her story from the inside.

From her childhood passion, her first tour to London, when a young Oscar Wilde threw lilies at her feet and Henry Irving led the applause for her extraordinary Phèdre, to the successes and scandals she later surpassed, becoming both the world’s first famous independent woman- and the most misunderstood. Faced with being cancelled, and vilified for her difference, Sarah Bernhardt lived by her vow “Quand Même!”  meaning ‘Despite all!’

Sarah, the actress, is rehearsing onstage, evoking a surprising and visceral drama. Caught between the myth and the monster (bien aimé) la scène et l’esprit, Sarah, the woman, reveals her inner self, for the first and very last time.

Performed in English, with some French.
